Storage between homes, and what it really costs

Chains break. Here is how containerised storage works, how many containers a house fills, and how to keep the bill down.

A quiet walkway past closed storage units in a warehouse

About one move in eight we do includes some storage, usually because a completion date slipped. It sounds complicated. It is not.

How it works

We load your things into wooden containers at your old home, seal them, and take them to our warehouse. They stay sealed until they come back to you. Nobody else’s things are stacked against yours, and nobody unpacks and repacks your load.

How many containers

One container is 250 cubic feet, about one full bedroom:

  • 1-bed flat: two containers
  • 2-bed home: three to four
  • 3-bed house: four to five
  • 4-bed house: six to seven

At £19 per container per week, a three-bed house in storage for four weeks costs roughly £300 to £380 on top of the move.

Keeping the bill down

  • Sell or give away what you were going to get rid of anyway, before it goes in a container.
  • Keep a suitcase of clothes and the first-night box with you, so you do not need access visits.
  • Pay twelve months up front if the wait is long; we take two months off.
